Aug 4, We are moving into our new home just after New Years and one thing the family has agreed on is that we want some “smart thermostats”.. After years of living in a house with bad thermostat placement right outside the office where I had all my computer gear so it ran about 10 degrees warmer than the rest of the house and other AC issues like a single unit feeding a dual-zoned setup resulting in poor AC flow in some rooms we were leaning towards the Ecobee units with the remote sensors. With that said, what are people’s thoughts or experiences between the Nest and Ecobee units? A big factor for us is the issue of random schedules. I can be in the office Tues-Thurs one week, or Wed – Fri another, and only Tues and Thurs the next, so I’m not sure how well the “learning” features would work. When home, I’m likely to spend hours in the office without even stepping out, so anything with a movement sensor wouldn’t pick me up and may think the house is empty.

Posted on Dec 07, Last Updated: Now that it’s been a full year since I installed the Nest I thought I’d reflect back on the experience. While I am still very happy with it, the actual energy savings, if any, are difficult to quantify. Just looking at the raw utility numbers, it doesn’t appear to have made much difference, but there are soooo many other factors at play, that I can’t say for sure.
In this post, I’ll share some details about my energy usage compared to pre-Nest usage, and some of the reasons why I think the device was still a good purchase. Energy Usage Now, to be fair, I don’t live in a household where I expected to see drastic changes.
A Year With The Nest Thermostat
This home won’t last long! This immaculate square foot home was built in , and has an open concept floor plan. This one owner home, shows pride of ownership and has been excellently maintained with upgrades such as a new NEST thermostat and a natural gas hook up for your bbq on a large 14’x16′ deck complete with a pergola with retractable covering.
There is even a central vacuum installed in the insulated, detached, two car garage. The main level is hardwood and has a half bath.

At the time I told Fortune readers that they should really buy the Amazon Echo based on my experience with the device, which I had owned since December. It has also fixed some of the issues with shared Google GOOG calendars so you can now get multiple calendars. Link it with Lutron lights: I love Lutron dimmers, and thanks to the link with the Wink hub I can now command my dining room lights, laundry room, and porch lights to go on and off or dim with my voice.
Turn on your humidifier: Actually, this could work with any appliance that you plug into an outlet and can be left on all the time. You can also do this using the WeMo outlets that the Echo has supported for some time. Provide a back door to your Sonos: This is somewhat janky, but you can control your Sonos speakers from the Amazon Echo if you only want to start and stop an existing playlist.
Connecting Generalaire humidifier to Nest
After some research, I learned I’d be missing out on a lot of functionality unless I upgraded my zone control board and that my Nests are very limited compared to the networked thermostats. The networked thermostats are really expensive and my Nest units weren’t cheap either, I’d prefer not give them up. From what I’ve gathered, the Nests will work fine with the UT with only a few limitations such as no error code feedback, etc..
I believe I understand that the variable fan control will work as intended, the UT will determine based on incoming air temp and the number of zones calling, right? I like the idea of the fan not running full speed on and off all night, it’s pretty close to my bedroom–so the is definitely important to me.

This document says there are 4 potential ways to hook up a humidifier. Standalone humidifier 1-wire, Standalone 2-wire, Builtin 1-wire, and Builtin 2-wire. Based on the manual for the humidifier, I think I have a bypass or standalone unit. I don’t understand if I have a 1-wire or 2-wire though. Both examples show 2 wires coming out of the humidifier.
This picture shows two different ways to wire and speaks about a bypass humidifier rather than stand alone and a Powered humidifier rather than built in.
How I Wired My Humidifier Into My Nest Thermostat
Warm mist humidifiers boil water to create steam. This is then sprayed into the atmosphere of your room to increase the amount of moisture in the air. Cool mist humidifiers come in two types – evaporative humidifiers and ultrasonic humidifiers:

I still have so much to learn about this new way of life but I thought it would be a good point to check in and share some things that are working and recognize some that aren’t. I am currently working 2 days a week and sometimes at night supporting their projects as a project manager but I’m hoping to add a third day shortly. Or two days a week I have the pleasure of working out of the creative co-working space The Aviary. The Nest Thermostat, The GOOD, The BAD, and The UGLY
Caulking Gun Step 1: Plan Your Wiring I could have continued to use the 2 thermostat wires that were in my wall plus add 2 more wires that will run outside the wall to a nearby outlet where I would plug in the 24vac transformer. I didn’t like this setup because I didn’t want the wire to the transformer exposed where the thermostat was mounted. The installation would look much cleaner if all the wiring ran through the wall as it did previously.
I needed 4 conductors.

It is always a good idea to quarantine a new pet when you first bring it home. Keep stress to a minimum. The new bird should be placed in a warm, quiet area with fresh food and water. Let your new pet get used to its new surroundings before subjecting the dove to handling, noise or stress. Be sure to use good hygiene by washing thoroughly after each handling of the bird or cage.
Most birds carry worm eggs in their defecations. Check your yellow pages or local pet stores to find a vet which is experienced in avian medicine. If you have other birds in your home, be sure to quarantine your new arrival for about 3 weeks. Look for signs of illness or problems with your new pet. Use both hands when handling the bird. They are stronger than they look. They will rapidly shrug their wings and kick with their feet with quick, unexpected and abrupt attempts. Go to the Perches and Supplies on this page for information on items you will need for your new bird.

You’ve asked several questions here. However, it’s always better to be sure rather than make assumptions, so there are several ways to do this: Look at the spec sheet or manual for your model Look for labels on the control board, probably where the transformer lines come in Look for labels on the transformer itself Use a multimeter to measure between C and R terminals Update: It’s rated at 0.
Connecting In general, by connecting between R and C, the thermostat motor will only have the ability to come on when the furnace is actively heating it won’t come on if the fan is set to ‘On’ mode, or if the air conditioner is on. Since you have a Humidifier terminal, instead of R you’d connect to that.
Thermostat signals and color code Lack of standards makes this interesting. While there isn’t an official standard for thermostat circuit wiring colors, there is a general pattern.
